While the chickens are further away, I work on mending the fence. When they come close, I concentrate exclusively on them and Indra. Here I’m getting him used to the chickens' different movements, noises and proximity while remaining calm. In our first training session, he was too excited to remain in a lying down position so we worked on “sit” and even so, he would stand up frequently. In this session, he remains sitting for long stretches and even lies down, of his own volition. A big improvement! ... *I dream of having free-ranging chickens and free-roaming dogs, living together in harmony. This is one of the (many!) steps I’m taking towards this goal.* *While the chickens remain inside their fenced-off enclosure, the dogs respect that space and ignore them. It would be easy for the dogs to get in, but they don’t. However, if a chicken gets out then all bets are off: Indra has chased and even killed chickens in the past. His prey drive is strong.* *He is an energetic dog with sudden movements, as he’ll immediately stand up or move towards something that piques his interest. If he jumps to his feet when a chicken attracts his attention, this will alarm the chicken and make her squawk and fly or run, which in turn makes her even more enticing to him. His prey drive is strong and he’s played this game before.
